Does everything have a beginning and end?

The law of conservation of energy states that nothing can be created nor destroyed. But if everything has a beginning and an end, how can that be true? At one point there had to be nothing. But what is nothing? When you think of nothing maybe you picture the blackness of space. But space contains tiny almost invisable particles that could be argued to be matter, even light has mass.

So if you do believe in the big bang and that everything has a beginning and an end, at one point in time there wasnt even space right? So how does all this start from nothing?
